Jean Archer Award for Children
The winners of the 2011 competition in the Museum garden
Local History Competition 2012 for children aged 4 to 11
Schools and individual children are invited to enter the annual Jean Archer Award for a project presented on A4 size pieces of paper linked to the history of Amersham. The competition is divided into age groups linked to school years and there are prizes for each age group.
For Early Years, the subject will be a drawing of any old building in Amersham.
For years 1 to 6, please describe one of the following topics in your own words and pictures, or poetry. You could even write a newspaper report from the time! The Judges prefer to see original drawings and handwriting.
- Old toys – tell us about some old toys you have seen. Perhaps your grandparents have some toys they can show you or you can come and see the toys in the museum.
- Transport in Amersham – how would you have travelled to Amersham in days gone by? Do you prefer trains, buses, horse and cart or a stagecoach?
- Amazing Objects – what is your favourite object on display at Amersham Museum? What do you like about it? Why not write a story about the person who might have owned the object and what they used it for?
Deadline and judging – the deadline for entries to be returned to the Museum is Friday 25th May 2012. Prizes will be awarded in early July.
Research – don’t forget that there is a lot of information about Amersham’s history in the Museum at 49 High Street and it opens again on Saturday 3rd March 2012.

Why is it called the Jean Archer Award? Jean Archer was well known as Amersham’s first Lady Mayor and a keen local historian. She lived in the town all her life and wrote many books about its history and local people. She was also responsible for re-starting the Town Band and helped to found both the Amersham Society and the Museum.
